A Busy Winter Sunday: Supporting My Son’s Tournament

4:30 AM: Early Start on a Cold Sunday

This Sunday started at 4:30 AM. My younger son was up early for his club activity, leaving the house at 6:15 AM. After sending him off, I prepared myself for the day. By 7:30 AM, my husband and I were ready to head to the tournament venue, carrying lunch with us: onigiri (rice balls), hot tea, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and a thermos filled with warm tonjiru (Japanese pork miso soup).

8:30 AM: The Tournament Begins

The tournament kicked off at 8:30 AM. Despite being held indoors, the venue was extremely cold, with a temperature of just 5°C (41°F). The snow outside added to the chill, and staying warm was exhausting. Thankfully, the warm tonjiru helped keep us comfortable. Meanwhile, my older son, who had the day off, initially planned to study but ended up sleeping in until noon. I had prepared curry in the auto cooker for him before leaving in the morning.

Unfortunately, my younger son’s team lost in the third round. Despite the loss, I was proud of his effort and determination. While waiting between matches, I had the chance to chat with other mothers, which made the day a bit more enjoyable.

6:00 PM: Back Home and Dinner Preparation

We returned home around 6 PM, and I immediately started preparing dinner. Tonight’s choice was a simple yosenabe (Japanese hot pot)—quick and easy after a long day. However, my family wasn’t thrilled with the repetitive menu. “I’m tired, so deal with it!” I told them. My younger son skipped dinner entirely, going straight to bed without even brushing his teeth. Hopefully, he won’t wake up with a cavity.

8:30 PM: Housework Before Rest
After dinner, I tackled a mountain of laundry. Once everything was hung to dry, I finally had a moment to relax. I noticed a LINE message from my parents, who live far away. I quickly replied before heading to bed.

11:30 PM: Reflection and Bedtime
Though it was a tiring day, I’m grateful for the moments spent supporting my son and connecting with other parents. However, I didn’t get a chance to study at all today, which I regret. Tomorrow, I need to catch up. At least I managed to get into bed before midnight. Goodnight!
